Steyning Gardening Club News

Well, what an amazing couple of months we have had. From our launch to our first demonstration, it has been a whirlwind of meeting lots of the lovely people who have welcomed our new club.

The launch was an overwhelming success with over 100 people in attendance and since then our numbers have soared.

Thank you all for making Steyning Gardening Club a success and thank you too for the complimentary messages both in person and via email, especially regarding the hall layout

Despite a few hiccups, we, like our gardens, are looking forward to the better weather and the chance to grow and establish ourselves as a part of the Steyning community and so we had our April meeting.

Lynne Broome delivered an amazing demonstration of how to plant up hanging baskets and containers. Not only was her demo full of wonderful plants, but Lynne also gave us lots of practical tips, answering questions as she planted and then the baskets and pots were raffled off, so many of our new members were lucky enough to walk away with some fabulous displays ready for the summer to come.

In true gardener’s style we are anticipating our next meeting on Monday 13th May, 19:30 at the Steyning Centre, with excitement.

Martin Jarvis from Culberry Nursery in Angmering will be sharing his extensive knowledge of growing herbs and their uses in the kitchen, and as a form of pest control. I think we could all do with as many tips as possible on how to keep the pesky pests away from our precious plants.

Summer is a time to be outside, and we have been fortunate enough to arrange two visits to a local sustainable flower farm, ‘Chalk’, in Findon. More details will follow shortly so put the 8th or 10th June into your diary if you are interested in finding out all about sustainable and organic flower growing and to follow the journey from seed to vase.

Today the sun is shining, and it makes our growing spaces feel even more special and full of potential and that is how we are feeling after our promising beginning, and as someone once said, ‘life must be full of enthusiasm, like a flower that blooms in the morning’.

We look forward to seeing members and guests on 13th May 19:30 at the Steyning Centre.
