Southdown Nursery
Friday 8th MaySouthdown Nursery, Steyning’s Community Nursery and Forest School In the heart of Steyning, with a strong sense of community, Southdown Nursery stands as a vibrant hub for early childhood discovery.
Welcoming children from the term after their second birthday, the nursery offers far more than childcare - it provides a thoughtfully crafted environment where curiosity, creativity, and confidence can take root.
What makes Southdown unique is its remarkable outdoor space with a flourishing vegetable patch and large sandpit. A well-loved climbing frame encourages physical confidence, while a recently revamped, all-weather purpose area ensures that play and learning continue whatever the forecast.
This new space features a mud kitchen, a potion-making table, and dedicated areas for the nursery’s on-site forest school activities.
This is all possible thanks to the generosity of local supporters, including funding from Steyning Co-op, the Steyning society, The Freemasons and The Wilson Memorial Trust. Steyning Downland Scheme also recently lent their time and skills to construct a beautiful hazel wood fence - an addition that not only frames the space but reflects the collaborative ethos.
Parents have volunteered their time on our termly fix-it days to help us maintain the inside and outside areas and enhance our facilities. We are so grateful to every person: the children, the parents, the volunteers, the staff and our other supporters, for ensuring our wonderful nursery continues to thrive.
Have a little time to spare - we’re looking for new trustees... As a registered charity, Southdown Nursery is powered not only by its dedicated staff, but by a passionate committee of parents past and present,. This behind-the-scenes team plays a vital role in ensuring the nursery continues to be a cornerstone of the Steyning community.
There are a variety of roles available, from helping to maintain and develop the nursery, to organising events that bring the community together, overseeing finances, or acting as a parent link - each role plays an important part in the bigger picture. The commitment is designed to be manageable, with just half-termly meetings.
