July: Steyning Gardening Club

Summer is here at last and as we welcome the warmer days, bluer skies, and more daylight in which to enjoy our outdoor spaces, we are pleased to say that we have continued to welcome new members to SGC.

Our meetings have been met with such positive comments that we are encouraged to think we are finding the right balance with our new club. Balance in our outdoor spaces is something many of us aim for, whilst at the same time maintaining our own individuality and creating spaces that welcome, not just our family and friends, but also the wonderful wildlife we are privileged to be surrounded by.

Our May meeting welcomed Martin Jarvis from Culberry Nurseries, Angmering, who shared the history of his family run nursery and how they have developed a special interest in herb growing and production. It was captivating to look back at the old photos and to hear Martin talk about his and his family’s continued fascination with herbs. Luckily for us, Martin had also brought along a good selection of his herbs for our members to purchase on the night.

In June, some of our members visited Chalk Farm Flowers in Findon, a sustainable flower farm, to see the wonderful journey from seed to vase. Excitingly, the first of many group trips we hope to be able to arrange as our club grows.

Variety, they say is ‘the spice of life’ and so we have tried to make our meetings as diverse as we can, whilst maintaining our gardening theme, and to this end, our 8th July meeting will be a fund-raising quiz. Gather your teams, maximum 6 people and come along for a fun night. £5 pp (incl welcome drink) and BYO snacks. Sign-ups are now open via the link on our newsletter or send an email to register your team.

With holiday season in full swing during August, we will not be having a meeting, but we can all look forward to our September meet where the lovely Lynne Broome will once again share her expertise, this time concentrating on Bulbs and Where to Plant them.

We look forward to seeing many members and guests on 8th July, 19:30 at the Steyning Centre.
