Gina Davies: Hand built pottery

My name is Gina Davies and I have lived in Steyning for over 17 years. In March last year, when everything came to a standstill and we were all forced to stay at home, I started teaching myself how to hand build pottery.

I needed to keep busy and keep my mind off things and as I love being creative, bought a bag of clay and there my journey started. With each item I made I became more excited and obsessed with making another, continually striving for perfection!

A few months later, I found a second-hand kiln and a small little wheel which fueled my creativity even more. Making pottery has really helped me cope through lockdown as it has helped me focus on something positive, especially during those difficult days when I have missed seeing family and friends.

Playing with clay is a form of mindfulness and is where I go to find my ‘happy place’. At some point when the restrictions are eventually lifted, I would love to help others who are struggling with their mental health find healing and wholeness by sharing what I have learnt.

I already have a small business called JC Threads where I design and sell Christian T shirts, hoodies, posters, greeting cards and gift items. I would normally exhibit at large events like Big Church Day Out at Wiston House but all my events were cancelled and since March last year, my business has really suffered. I want to raise awareness of small local businesses by sharing my story and encourage you to think about supporting local next time you buy.
