Games Room Project at Dingemans Court
Friday 14th March
Dingemans Court is a housing development for people over the age of 55.
In the main building there was an old medical room that had become storage for several things and the room was not being used to its full potential. The Neighbourhood Wardens engaged regularly with the residents as they were running a coffee and quiz club every two weeks.
From speaking with the residents and learning about their needs and interests, the decision was made to turn it into a games room. With the support of the property manager, the Wardens contacted the Wilson Memorial Trust who donated money to purchase games and items to convert the room. The room now has two new darts boards and mats, an indoor bowls set, two cornhole games, and a brand-new mini fridge.
After speaking with one of the residents that has MS, they requested an activity to help with their coordination and movement. The Wardens installed a mini basketball hoop to help with this as the resident could work on putting the ball through the net.
The residents donated a table football game and a pool table. Other games that are available in the room include boccia and skittles. There is also a space for board games or arts and crafts. The room has been decorated with pictures from memorable sporting moments, football shirts that were donated by Steyning Football Club and bar apparel donated by the local pubs.
The residents are hoping to run a family open day in the Spring and are planning to use a lot of the activities and games from the games room as one of the attractions. Amanda White from Saxon Weald commented: The games room has made a huge difference to the residents here at Dingemans. Residents have been asking for a long time for this room to be put to good use and a games room was always their hope.
Shooting Field bungalows come over to the scheme now to play a game of Pool. Residents have used the room with their families to keep the children entertained. The Wardens hope the residents enjoy the room and that it is a space they can entertain friends and family, or just relax in.
