Calling all ex Scouts
Monday 23rd JanuaryHave you ever camped at Hillside Scout Campsite, near Small Dole, West Sussex?
The campsite was established in 1936 and has been used by the Scout movement and other young people from East and West Sussex since then to enjoy the countryside and camping experience.
It has provided a facility for the young people of Adur and Hove to escape their urban environment and get back to nature.
Over the years the facilities at the site have been upgraded from the metal tin hut that first stood on the site, to a brick-built Training room, with outside toilets and a caravan offering indoor accommodation, to a purpose-built Bunkhouse and more recently refurbished inside toilets.
The current chairman and committee are continuing to develop the site for the young people and would like to hear from any person who may have used the site in the 1940’s 50’s or 60’s to help create an archive of what the site looked like when they visited and memories they may have had.
Sadly, the site has suffered several setbacks in the last few years due to vandalism and theft so we are also appealing for any help, whether financial or practical, to help improve the security of the site and resources.
