A ‘sublime’ performance of Handel’s Messiah in Steyning

A fabulous festive evening concert of Handel’s Messiah rewarded the audience at Steyning Parish Church recently.

Over 200 people battled snow and ice to enjoy this very special pre-Christmas concert in Steyning Parish Church on 15th of December.

And they were not disappointed.

The Sussex-based Hanover Band and Chorus, which now routinely travels all over the world to perform music from the Hanover period, bewitched the Steyning audience with an exceptional concert. The piece was performed by the 20-piece orchestra, and the 16-strong Hanover Chorus who were joined by four soloists, Tara Bungard (soprano), Timothy Morgan (alto), Bradley Smith (tenor) and Edward Price (baritone).

From start to finish, the audience was mesmerised by a highly sensitive rendition of this famous seasonal masterpiece, with people enthusiastically describing it as “sublime”, “outstanding”, uplifting”, and “a special treat”. What’s more, the Steyning audience were able to hear it ahead of Londoners!

This was the latest community event organised by the Friends of Steyning Parish Church. In October, they held a half-term afternoon of ‘Fun with the Tudors’ at no charge for local children, who took part in Tudor-themed crafts, dancing and dressing up as part of the celebrations to mark the 500th anniversary of the oak carved Tudor oak screen which is found in the Parish Church.

The Friends also hosted a world premiere performance of a new composition inspired by the Tudor screen, written for and played by four harps from local musicians, Glissando. The Friends of Steyning Parish Church hope to organise future quality concerts for the local community in 2023.
